Genesis Between the Teeth of Mangroves
Kananga Water
The Caribbean space is “saturated with messages” and the “spectrum of Caribbean codes is so varied and dense that it holds the region suspended in a soup of signs” (Antonio Benítez-Rojo). Doubling in the Caribbean creates images with hidden and polysemic meaning (Álvaro Medina); the religious icons are signs of colonization of the islands as well as subaltern subversion and creolization intrinsic to the Caribbean. The allegory-sea is the “in-between space” or third space “that is the site of translation” (Okwui Enwezor), symbolizing rupture and renewal and the performances of rituals of birth-death-rebirth that occur in the sea.
